Proteas' depth a problem

The Proteas face the prospect of a whitewash in the Test series at Newlands later this week. It was definitely not meant to be like this.

Let’s start by giving Australia credit for regrouping so well in a short period; they look a different team to the one in Australia. Their selectors have injected some exciting new talent into the team in Phil Hughes and Marcus North while Brad Haddin has developed into a quality international batsman/wicketkeeper.

Their fast bowlers have improved and they now have a well balanced attack that includes pace and swing. Australia also have good depth in their fast bowling department with the imminent return of Brett Lee and Stuart Clark.

The one area that they continue to struggle is to find a spin bowler of international quality. However, they are no different to most Test playing nations.

South Africa on the other hand have developed into a good team, but not a good international squad. Now that certain players have retired, been injured or lost form, there are no experienced players to replace them. The Proteas reserve strength has been badly exposed.

The Indian Cricket League and Kolpak ruling have decimated South African cricket of its depth of experienced players. South Africa is now feeling the loss of players like HD Ackerman, Dale Benkenstein and Jacques Rudolph on the batting front. They have been forced to pick an uncapped player in Imraan Kahn and the country’s best middle order batsman, Ashwell Prince, to open the batting at Newlands.

Almost impossible at Newlands

On the bowling front the cupboard is even bearer with regards to experienced bowlers and the selectors have been forced to bring the 19-year-old Wayne Parnell into the squad. However, they will probably replace Morne Morkel with his brother Albie to improve the balance of the team. If 20 wickets have been hard to get in the first two Tests for South Africa then it may be almost impossible at Newlands.

The selectors would have picked Charl Langeveldt for Newlands, but he is in cricket exile with Derbyshire. Andre Nel is another experienced bowler that has been prematurely discarded for whatever reason.

Luckily for Cricket South Africa the Kolpak situation will in the future not continue to create problems for them. The work permit qualifications have become more stringent and players need to have played international cricket to qualify as Kolpak players.

The ICL seems to be on its last legs and will also no longer be a threat to CSA. These two developments will make it easier for the country to retain its experienced players in the years ahead.

CSA also needs to abolish the quota system at franchise level like rugby has as soon as possible to ensure the development of their future players. They need to avoid the situation where a South African 'A' opening batsman like Blake Snijman cannot play for his franchise because of the quota system.

CSA needs to develop all its resources on an equitable basis to build a quality and experienced squad for the Proteas to remain a leading team in international cricket.

imraan taahir the next SA spinner who is eligible to play soon .... thank God he is not recognised as a player of colour even though he is an Ex Pakistani.

Well here's a prophet in the making !!! Disregard all further predictions from this man's crystal ball..

what a negative little boy you are john.Get the impression you are 5ft 2ins and have small mans(boy in your case)disease.

Naphy, dream away. Ahmed is not even close to test level. In addition some of your other pets will have to make way for Smith, Kallis and AB. but you must surely know that, unless you're completely thick. Khan has to prove himself anyway, and thats not so easy. Also, unless you live under a stone, you'll know that Jakes Rudolph wants to play here again. The competition among batsmen is going to be fierce. I doubt Alexander is going to get a chance any time soon. He must get in the queue! Flopsy or Lopsy or whatever? He's no Johnson, I'll say that. He's much slower, LMF, and he hasn't mastered the armball to the same degree. At this stage, not a strike bowler. Lots of work to do getting his pace up to at least LFM. Thandi? I dont think so. He's flattered only to deceive. Look at his stats. He can play T20, not tests. Harris remains number 1 in tests and Botha in LOI's. I think the leggy has a better chance than TT too. It surprises me that you havent mentioned Tsolekile? Pity, I would have enjoyed comprehensively demolishing that argument.

Corry Versluis, well said. At least you have the guts and the honesty to see the truth. As an Aussie I don't really understand your quota system but any system that can keep the best players at any age group from advancing their skills is bound to lead to problems. You have to play your best players at any level. Skill should be the ticket to success not skin colour. However, that being said something must be in place to help less advantaged kids have a chance to get somewhere. In the Australian system provided the young player has the talent he will be helped along the way by the district club system in place in the citys or by the very healthing country cricket comps. Anyway, go Australia .........................................3 - 0

"Just cricket", you are spot on. Sadly there are many "fans" here who judge everything through racial spectacles. Its a disease. The truth is SA cricket has started declining through lack of depth. The obsession with race has deprived us of many good young whites, and we have now crossed a threshold. Take Smith, Kallis, Steyn out of the present side and I wouldnt give a fig for their chances. Steyn is 80% of SA's attack. Thats not healthy. Smith and Kallis are still the backbone of the batting. We must drop all quotas now and allow everyone a chance. Selection must be on pure merit, no humming or hawing. It'll take a while for the new talent to come through, so we can expect a dip anyway. Better to start now.
naphy3/18/2009 12:29 PM
To all those saying "abolish quotas pick on merit", I hope you realise if we did that Makhaya Ntini, Graig Alexander, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Imran Khan, Ashwell Prince, Ahmed Amla, JP Duminy, Hashim Amla would all be in the starting XI with Thandi Tshabalala as the next spiner in line after Harris. So Yes, let's pick on merit shall we. @Just Cricket: I feell flatttered, yuo postd a whule coment in respose of ny 2 mistakes. Just to make your day I made a few more typos for you spot. have fun searching!

I wonder when south Africa won the series in Australia were we also a team lacking depth? its the same team, same players but pride and arrogance thats whats loosing games. every player needs to be given a chance... the best must be chosen.

Naphy - brilliant comment. could not have said it better.
Just Cricket3/18/2009 8:23 AM
Zane Alexander, Morlel? I don't know these players at all. I know a Graig Alexander yes and a Morne or Albie Morkel. Although Graig Alexander has taken 31 wickets in the SS, it came at a not so impressive 30 average and almost 4 runs per over. If Ntini, who has taken 26 wickets at 16 average and 2.4 runs per over in the SS is struggling at test level, goodness know how Alexander can be chosen on his stats. Of the fast bowlers taking 20 or more wickets in the SS even Morne Morkel, Charl Langeveldt, Cliffie Deacon, Dillon du Preez, Victor Mpitsang, Quinton Friend, Rusty Theron has figures better than Alexander's. Certainly not head and shoulders above the rest. Khan only averages 38 in domestic cricket, hardly breathtaking stuff. I know he has done well this season, let's hope he can take it a step further. I still say there are too many wannabe all rounders in our domestic competition.
Faan3/18/2009 8:20 AM
Australia seemingly overcame their "lack of depth" by pushing rookie Hughes and well experienced North forward with confidence, and have succeeded so far. The new found skills of Hilfenhaus, Johnson and the other bowlers are a result of planning and focus on winning, by all concerned. In contrast, the Proteas from day 1 appeared under pressure, lacked good leadership and were lethargic in stead of in the faces of the opposition. It is for this reason alone and not due to any stupid quotas, selection or preparation that we are loosing. We lost it before the first ball was bowled. Mental preparation or lack thereof, was the obstacle we stumbled over. Greame and his men will survive and prove themselves to be an excellent cricket team.
Sue3/18/2009 8:16 AM
John R has hit the nail on the head. It's time players were selected on merit, not colour. We were all lead to believe that ended with the new South Africa. What a laugh!
Eugene3/18/2009 5:34 AM
Can't you people see that Mickey Athur is the problem.Fire him + Gerald Majola and S.A. Cricket will once more be a force!!!!!
Django3/18/2009 2:53 AM
Whatever happened to Nel? I am an Aussie and didnt follow the Langveldt episode too closely but he always competed. He was probably your best bowler when you last toured Australia. I always enjoyed his over the top aggression, especially when Gilchrist got stuck in. You guys had alot of talent that didnt pan out over the years. Guys like Nantie, Ngam.
Anonymous User3/17/2009 11:55 PM
All I want to say is that I am so frustrated with the whole sa setsup that I dont understand why we have to play the 3rd test as we have being humilated enough and i know that we wont win the third test because Australia will send us into bat first and we will be bowled out for under 200runs and australia will get a healthy lead. At this moment in time i think our cricket will go the same way as all sports in sa as the government will destroy it just like they are doing in the country concerning crime etc. Unfortunately, the 20/20 will go to Australia 2-0 unless weather interfers and the one day international will be 4-1 to Australia as they will have gained much needed confidence and in fighting will harm sa until they sort out the infighting. So long Proteas.
John R3/17/2009 9:15 PM
Yes Arthur, time to drop quotas altogether. If SA wants to be number 1 we cant do it with one hand tied behind our backs. Quotas as they stand are excluding 70% of young whites from SA cricket! I'm afraid so. 50% get excluded at school and, of the rest 40% are excluded at franchises. We can see it now in the lack of depth in SA cricket. We dont even have a decent 3rd seamer for Morne? Ntini will go quite soon too. Batting wise its worse. After JP and now Jake Rudolph, theres nobody. I'm ignoring Khan for now because he has to prove he can perform in tests. I make this prediction: If SA doesnt drop quotas completely very soon, we are handing leadership to Australia on a plate. Despite their 20m people, their cricket system is miles ahead of ours. Cricket is a big sport in Aus, much bigger than here. If you take their love of cricket and combine that with their 1st world status, you have a winning combination. Passion, discipline, brains, dedication, talent, you name it! SA cant compete without a full complement of whites.

Utter Bollocks! There is nothing wrong with our depth. The only problem we have is selection fullstop. Khan has 5 first class tons this season, his selection should be viewed as reward for excellence instead of desperation. Parnell is there purely on favouritism. Zane Alexander has been head and shoulders the better bowler but for some reason he's overlooked over a player that has done Nothing to justify selection. Another case of the coach/skipper favourite being picked on potential instead of merit. Three weeks ago they were talking about how RSA is fortunate to have so many top class middle order batsmen, Prince was left out for heaven's sake. The decision to bring him back is as an opener is not a reflection of lack of depth but rather a reflection of stupidity and favouritism again. A.B would have been a more logical option but for some reason he cannot be bothered to do anything he's not comfortable with and as a result our best middle order batsman is forced to open. We cannot talk about lack of depth for as long as Boucher is in this team. There are so many promising options available (Kuhn, Canning, de Villiers) but no, Boucher Must play. Tsotsobe (injured I know) has been consistently the top quick in the SS series but for some reason a struggling Morlel was given an extended run. Talk of abolishing the quota system is ridiculous, especialy for a team that can't find a place for Prince. Nobody likes this system but it at least ensures players get chances they might not have gotten otherwise. Too early I'm afraid!
Stephen3/17/2009 2:12 PM
@Corry Versluis, lets be honest posts like yours are getting old and stale. You show similar arrogance that was showed by the Aussies in Australia. Not admitting your side was beaten by a better side
Bonani Mpi3/17/2009 2:00 PM
Just 3 months ago we were praising the proteas depth with the rise of JP Duminy. i still believe depth is no problem. The problem lies with the selection of players who continue to show poor form. And i have to agree with cricket lover on morne morkel........
Corry Versluis3/17/2009 1:37 PM
Let's be honest. The series in Australia was rather the Aussies snatching defeat from the jaws of victory rather than the Proteas winning. Australia had the upper hand in most sessions but failed to deliver the killer blow and then stellar performnces by certain SA players (here I do admit they were awesome) like Steyn batting, JP Duminy saved SA and got us victories where normally Aussies would have won albeit less comfortably than usual. Back here in SA, the Aussies have regrouped and comprehensively thrashed us in every aspect of the game. They have dominated every sessions and killed our apsirations in the clinical methodical way we have gotten used to seeing the last 20 years. Our guys also thought that to win the series here they merely have to pitch up to the games. This being our typical arrogant self glorifying attitude we always seem to have no matter how many times we were froced to eat humble pie.
martin3/17/2009 1:33 PM
I think the selectors/management continue to look at the short terms situation and avoid looking at the bigger picture of developing cricketers for the future. Even if the Kolpac option will fall away you will still promising players finding alternative ways of playing representative cricket and we will continue to moan about the loss of talent
AndreS3/17/2009 1:00 PM
I don't think the problem is with our player at the moment. I would rather look at our coaching staff and ask how good they are really. It took them more than 2 years to sort out Graham Smiths batting problem of playing on all the time. They could not sort out Morkel's bowling in over two years. Surely that is what they are there for. We've got the players. But have we got the coaches?
Gavin3/17/2009 12:50 PM
I would love to hear a response about why the selectors refuse to give Johan Botha a chance in the test squad. I have no issue with Paul Harris but I just feel that Johan Botha is so much more rounded as a cricketer than Harris. I have also heard, but I am not sure how true that is, that Botha is not even the second or third choice spinner for tests. The selectors apparently have Imran Tahir as 2 and Thandi Tshabalala as 3.
Cricket Lover3/17/2009 12:47 PM
I generally agree with your statements however this time i don't. Have a look at the top run scorers for the season so far together with the number of innings played. you will notice that A Amla and I Khan are at the top. however when Van Jaarsveld scored well he was draughted to the top asap. I say we need to keep the quotas until the mix is sorted. To those who chose the Kolpak route good riddance.. As for M Morkel i don't think he would have lasted if his name was Tsotobe...
Yucca3/17/2009 12:14 PM
I do not agree with the title of your comment. The quota sytem is failing some talent and exposing some. I feel what we need is to bring back more teams so that there is more cricket and more exposure. I must question why you question the selectors choice of Parnell Arthur? You have realised there is a quota system in this country right? And you have realised that Ntini may retire soon? That means we must find a replacement and they must be of color. So that leaves Lobsy who is injured and Parnell. If we were to bring in a white bowler to replace Ntini we would limit our batting and reserve batting to players of color which could create problems.
Neil3/17/2009 9:11 AM
Well put Arthur! Apart from your comments which are valid, I feel that the Proteas were under prepared for the test matches. The Australians came here with the same intensity that SA showed in Australia, and they outplayed us in every facet of the first two tests. M. Morkel is a talent, but he needs to have more time in the middle bowling, the same can be said for the rest of the bowling attack. Parnell is one for the future, but by pushing him into the starting line up (if they do), he will be found wanting. The biggest issue is the qouta system, and unless that is resolved, we will lose more players to overseas teams, whether it is through Kolak, or whether it is through players following the ancestoral route! That to me is the biggest hurdle we face! Lets hope it is resolved sooner rather than later!
Wikus3/17/2009 9:02 AM
Andre Nel is useless. If we can't do better then him then SA cricket is in a sorry state. I don't think that we have a depth problem. There are a lot of players playing domestic cricket that I would choose above players in our current squad. And am I the only one who thinks that Botha > Harris would solve a lot of our problems? And we will have a spinner who actually has some variation.
Just Cricket3/17/2009 8:29 AM
You hit the nail on the head with the quota system. That is why Blake Snijman moved from the Lions to the Titans, where he is doing well (49.50 average). He never good a good run with the Lions. Also that is another reason why we don't have bowling depth at franchise level any more. Too many bits and pieces players that bat a little and bowl a little. We don't need all rounders, we need fast bowlers!!!
