Johannesburg - Gauteng professional golfer Musiwalo Nethunzwi is determined to break his long spell of not winning when he competes at the Zambia Open at Lusaka Golf Club on Thursday.

The Soweto-raised golfer has not won any notable contest on the Sunshine Tour since turning professional in 2013. His only victories so far are winning the Soweto Country Cup in 2013 and 2014 at the Soweto Country Club.

But, even though taking trophies at big contests is a tough mission to accomplish for Nethunzwi, the 28-year-old player is optimistic that the Zambian event will mark a turning point in his career. He is also optimistic that the Zambian Open will set the stage for him to make his mark.

“The Zambian Open is one of the top events on the Sunshine Tour calendar on the continent. I’m determined to register my first big win at this competition. I’ve been working very hard on my swing and should take it easy in Lusaka,” he said.

However, Nethunzwi, who sharpens his golfing skills at Modderfontein Golf Club, may not sail as smoothly as he wishes at the 72-hole Lusaka course.

He will have to stave off intense competition from defending champion and compatriot Jaco Ahlers, who won last year’s contest by carding a score of 271.

“I played so badly last year that I failed to make the cut. Jaco should watch out because I’m ready to take his title this time around,” Nethunzwi said.

Other golfers set to give it their best shot at this year’s tournament include Englishman Ross McGowan and Mzansi’s Wallie Coetsee. McGowan won in 2015, while Coetzee prevailed in 2014.

This year’s tournament prize is R1.6 million.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
